Relativistic kinematics for musicians | Lily Asquith | Life & Physics
25 May 2012, 3:05 am
Lily Asquith begins a guide to making music from particles A couple of years ago I became involved in a grand plan to make sounds out of LHC data. We called this project LHCsound . Recently we have revisited the idea with the aim of listening to real data produced in the proton-proton collisions happening right now, and I found myself back in my favourite place - talking to (okay, emailing ...

LHC gets first glimpse of excited baryon
1 May 2012, 11:20 am
Evidence for the excited neutral Xi_b baryon was hard to find amid the particle detritus at the Large Hadron Collider
New "Beauty Baryon" Particle Discovered at Large Hadron Collider
1 May 2012, 9:25 am
A never-before-seen subatomic particle has popped into existence inside the world's largest atom smasher, bringing physicists a step closer to unraveling the mystery of how matter is put together in the universe. [More]

"And what I wanted to do was, I wanted to explore problems and areas where we didn't have answers. In fact, where we didn't even know the right questions to ask." - Donald Johanson You can learn an awful lot about the Universe by asking it different questions than you asked about it previously. If all you ever used were your own senses, there would be an awful lot to learn, but you would be ...
New particle discovered at CERN
27 April 2012, 10:16 am
Physicists have discovered a previously unknown particle composed of three quarks in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator. A new baryon could thus be detected for the first time at the LHC. The baryon known as Xi_b^* confirms fundamental assumptions of physics regarding the binding of quarks.

CMS experiment observes new Xi_b beauty particle
27 April 2012, 4:43 am
The CMS experiment has submitted a paper for publication describing the first observation of a new, excited beauty baryon known as the Ξ*b0, with a statistical significance of more than 5 standard deviations (5σ) above the expected background. The mass is measured to be 5945.0 ± 2.8 MeV.

In this case (illustrated above) electrons and muons (leptons, labelled as "l+ and l-" in the picture). The leptons we measure are therefore the four grand-daughters of the Higgs boson. We add up the energy of leptons 1 and 2 (E1+E2) and their ...
New Exclusive Upsilon Decays Observed By Belle! - science20.com
9 May 2012, 6:53 pm
Upsilon mesons produced in the collision of 400 GeV protons with a fixed target were observed to decay into pairs of energetic muons, producing a bump in an otherwise steeply falling background spectrum in the combined mass distribution of the muon pairs ...
The Plot Of The Week - No SUSY In New CMS Search - science20.com
6 May 2012, 6:57 pm
The analysis recently published by CMS I am discussing today is a search for proton-proton collisions that produce high-energy electrons or muons, accompanied by large missing transverse momentum and b-quark jets. Ok, ok, don't leave just yet - I am going ...
Subatomic particle discovery pushes limits of current physics - msnbc.com
3 May 2012, 3:33 pm
Physicists at the world's largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva, Switzerland, have watched a type of particle called B mesons decay into other particles called muons — a very unusual occurrence. By measuring ...
New Particle Discovered at CERN - Science Daily
27 April 2012, 9:35 am
The CMS detector is designed to measure the energy and momentum of photons, electrons, muons and other charged particles with a high degree of accuracy. Various measuring instruments are arranged in layers in the 12,500-ton detector, with which traces of ...
