LAWRENCE — Jack Bergeron climbed through the ranks of the Lawrence Fire Department, becoming chief in December, without ever obtaining a college degree. Last Saturday, 35 years after becoming a firefighter, Bergeron got his associates degree in fire science after Northern Essex Community College ceremoniously gave him the single credit he'd lacked since the mid-1970s.

State Representative Denise Garlick added her voice to that of state Senator James Timilty with a letter to Governor Deval Patrick that calls for him to support the full remediation of the former Medfield State Hospital property and the portion of the Charles River adjacent to it.
